Best Lighting Tips for Advertising Photography
It has been widely proven by many psychologists that people buy a product based on need, emotional attachment, and display. An advertising photographer has to make an advertisement or an item appealing on those grounds. Whether you are selling your product on a national platform or e-commerce websites, such as ebay, here are a few tips to help you sell your products.
When you are shooting for advertising photography you want to make sure your pictures look the best they can. Whether its for TV, web, or print advertising, lighting can make or break your pictures and impact your sales. You want to stay away from harsh lighting situations and outdoor sunlight. The best settings for advertising photography are soft light setting. Using the camera’s flash will almost always produce a more harsh effect on your pictures. Using adjustable lighting stands, light box or tent and a light meter is generally the way to go for professional looking shots. Soft light reduces contrasting that can make your pictures look too sharp, colors “bleed” or otherwise too contrast-y or unpleasing to the eye.
Lighting angles are a big part of making an object look its best. You want to make sure your light sources are hitting the subject from below and above. Anything else can horribly reduce the quality of the photo and make your post-production editing more difficult. Many many photographers suggest that to get the best quality pictures your camera must be set in manual mode so that you can control your settings according to your depth of field preferences and needs. Generally speaking, it is also widely proven that the best settings for your lenses should have an f-stop of 11-16 and again, this depends on your depth of field preferences. You may want to take a few “test shots” to determine the best lighting settings and record them so that you can remember them.
Another tip for great pictures is using a tripod. Along with a light tent, and a light meter, a tripod can save you time. It will prevent camera shake and give you better quality pictures without the motion blur you may get when you take your photos. Even the most experienced of photographers are susceptible to camera shake at times, so having a tripod around doesn’t hurt.
People buy products based on visual display and the emotion it brings to the consumer. Lighting plays a big part in how pictures are displayed. Whether you are shooting for print, web or other display advertising, having the right lighting settings can make or break your sales. It may help to record your settings to make sure that you have settings that will work to produce better pictures time and time again.
