Canon Releases EOS 7D (Everything Else)

We’ve pretty much covered every feature of the new Canon 7D that’s worth at least one heartfelt “wow,” so let’s move to the less wow-worthy–but still pretty impressive–features of this new product.

And speaking of kicking guts, Canon surely knows to hit it right where it hurts most. The Nikon 300s’ main selling point is its ability to take videos—something that a lot of people were looking for. But with the Canon 7D’s release, Nikon 300s is losing a big part of its appeal.

The 7D’s video-taking capabilities can be considered the best in the market today. It has the ability to shoot 1080p video at 30, 24, or 25 frames per second (FPS). And, if you decrease that to 720p, you can take photos at a whopping 60FPS.

This camera also has a dedicated switch that allows the photographer to flip from video to stills in a heartbeat. The button encircles a stop/record button for the video, too.

Here are some sample videos taken with the Gizmodo):

Official video samples can be viewed at Canon Japan’s web site.

Canon Releases EOS 7D (Part 1)

It hasn’t been all that long since Nikon has released the D300s—which, until now, has been unchallenged as the only DSLR that can take videos as well as still shots—and already Canon has released a new model that, based from its specs (as well as some user reviews), can definitely give the D300s a good kick in the gut: the Canon EOS 7D.

Stable Videos at a Lower Cost With the Zgrip iPhone Jr.

Undeniably, it’s difficult enough to hold big cameras (which have proper grips) steady when taking photos and videos, and it’s definitely doubly difficult when you’re using smaller picture-taking devices, like the iPhone 3Gs. That’s why iPhone 3Gs shooters will be happy to know that the rather expensive Zgrip iPhone Pro (worth a whopping $295) now has a more affordable version: the Zgrip iPhone Jr., which is priced at $69. ZGrip Jr. has most of the same features as its more expensive predecessor, except that the earlier version is more adjustable than this one.

The Zgrip iPhone Jr. is made by Zacuto, a camera accessories manufacturer. This tool enables the photographer to take stable photos and videos with the iPhone 3Gs. It has a ¼ 20” thread, where you can attach it to a tripod. The Zgrip Jr. also has the same-sized thread on top, so you can mount accessories, like lighting gears, on it.

So yes, I’ve been caught. Looking at the new Canon 5D MarkII. I was walking around the city with a old friend of mine on Monday at lunchtime who runs a magazine here in Australia called Bluff magazine. He was wanting some advise on some new camera gear and I was more than happy to assist, given that I now had an opportunity to look through some of the larger retailers in the CBD. These certainly can’t compare to anything in the US or Asia. And they certainly aren’t a B&H!

So anyway, we walked around the major stores and we ended up looking more closely to the Canon range of Digital SLRs – not much bias from me … (cough cough). This is what I feel more comfortable in chatting about. And I do know whats on offer more so than any other range.

Let me fast forward a little to me. I was showing my friend…

I am so amazed at the awesome footage that is coming through these days with the high-speed cameras. Rob posted a great article a little while ago with HD slow motion footage.

This particular slow motion footage is from Discovery.

See what you think of this…

This is part of a NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) 2009 show reel for the new HD, high speed camera system from I-Movix. It’s the only true HD 1000fps broadcast capable camera in the market. This thing blows the doors to creativity wide open. That’s especially true in the world of sports where all of the interesting stuff takes place in a fraction of a second.

Can you imagine what will happen when they have one of these at every game? All of those can’t miss moments will be recorded in perfect slow motion at a ridiculously high resolution. T.V. stations will start building up huge archives of the most important ones. I don’t know. When I saw this video and how creatively it was done, it truly has made me see the huge potential digital video has in the future.

Pretty soon, the amateur videographer will be able to do as much as a professional, and for a…
