The winners of the 2009 Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism were announced in Sydney on November 27 and images from the finalists in the five photographic categories will tour to Brisbane, Newcastle and Perth in 2010.
With emotive, celebratory and evocative images of daily life, sports and spot news both in Australia and around the world; photographs depicted an array of events and topics from Victoria’s terrible bushfires to the glory of the Olympic Games and the loss and pain in refuge camps in Congo.
The Nikon sponsored awards include daily life, sport, news, photographic essay and the coveted award for Press Photographer of the Year. This went to Renee Nowytarger from The Australia for her body of work that features an exhausted Malcolm Turnbull.

This is a great opportunity to get connected with nonprofit organizations and the photo industry professionals. More importantly it is a great way to support the arts and help increase awareness about mental illness. You will meet alot of wonderful people at this event. The competition is sponsored by “What Touched My Soul” organization. What is nice about this competition is that you get to capture something that touches your soul. It is a nice break from trying to capture someone else’s emotions and action. This can be in any area of photography. You have until September 18th. Or you may have already taken that special photo. If so you can submit your entry now. It’s these types of competitions that are refreshing and inspiring adn helps to support a cause. At the end of each season, the NBL awards those who have produced the best pieces of media for the year. The awards range from Best Feature Article, Best Photograph – Action, Best Photograph – Non-Action, Best Television Feature Story, Best Television News Story, Best Radio Presentation Package and Best Radio News Package. The two which are specifically for photography are Best Action and Best Non-Action photograph.
We’re very excited to have been picked for this year’s awards. Frankly, we’re as shocked about the award as we are about the actual photos themselves. Who would ever have thought that dunk could have turned out so amazing? You never plan for these things. You just set up your equipment, get there for the moment, and press the shutter during that fraction of a second when it needs to be pressed.
