What to photograph today in Melbourne

It’s 5 A.M and cold in Melbourne. I’m wide-awake, drinking my first espresso of the day, and I suddenly feel like I should be doing something else. I’m going through photos from yesterday’s shoot. Sure, it’s productive, but maybe a different approach, a different angle, that might bring in more clients.

It’s a thought that’s not uncommon among photographers and creative types. Sometimes you feel like you’re targeting the wrong audience with your work. Perhaps your work only speaks to a tiny fraction of people on this planet, and if you could just widen that slice, the business would boom. I often wonder if my photography is too niche, too specific for the mass market. Maybe I should photograph something different today…

And then I sit back, take another sip, and say to hell with that! The feeling of doubt and uncertainty is never any fun, but do you want to know…

Melbourne Shoot With Ironman Matt White And Luke Bell

We just posted the video from our photo shoot with 220 Triathlon Magazine. Being a Melbourne based sports photographer, it seems like I barely ever get to capture the athletes just sitting down and being themselves. This shoot was a nice change of pace.

As we setup shop in the restaurant, we noticed quite a few interesting backgrounds and pieces of furniture to use in the shoot. We were primarily looking for a wide range colors and textures, going from bright reds to shiny silvers while incorporating smooth leather and burberry surfaces. We found that certain materials worked really well with the clothing the athletes were wearing,…

Nicole and I ventured out on Saturday afternoon to check out what ACMI Screen Worlds. It was certainly an eye-opener as I discovered some of my childhood during the walk around. And of course I ended up looking at the games and new generation things such as the iPhone. But one thing that I really enjoyed was the old style arcade games from the old C64 with all its old parts such as the tape drive.

As I moved on further I noticed a very interesting large object that you could walk into. At first I didn’t know what it was all about. As we got closer it became apparent that the object was a photography booth. Not the typical booth though. It was more like a Matrix looking. A 3D look at the person or persons that were standing in the middle.

Without hesitation Nicole…

Royal Photographic Society

Founded in 1853, the Royal Photographic Society has a distinguished history promoting the art and science of photography. It traces its origins to an initiative to form a photographic society in London in anticipation of an exhibit in the gallery of the Society of Arts. The Royal Photographic Society has since grown in size and in importance. It is now a global organization on a mission to advance the cause of photography. It has a Royal Charter that was granted in July 2004.

Membership in the Royal Photographic Society is open to everyone all over the world. Its current members range from seasoned professionals to students. The three levels of membership depending on knowledge and abilities are Licentiateship, Associateship and Fellowship. Through an online community and regional and special Interest group events, members are able to share their skills with each other.

In Australia, the Royal Photographic Society has an active Victorian Chapter in Melbourne that meets monthly. The two special interest groups of the Victorian Chapter are the Photographic History Group and the Digital Working Group that similarly hold regular…

I have been debating over this post since late last week, due to the very nature of what I call a camera. But as most people that know me well enough know that I have a love for just about anything Apple. Given that I wrote a small piece on design which featured none other than Johnathan Ive.

So the question remains, “do I think the new iPhone 3G S is a great camera?” And “will it live up to all the hype and expectations?”

I think so. The camera itself is 3 megapixels. Which for a small compact device, it really is enough for me. Of course I wouldn’t use it for any shoots, but rather I would use it for the purpose of impromptu  photo taking. I have hundreds of photos of weird and wonderful things that were taken by my iPhone. They range form some of the best cusine in Melbourne (I love a great lunch) to…
