This past Novemeber, we worked with Zoggs to come up with a few shots that really show off what these goggles can do for professional triathletes. If you don’t already know about Zoggs, I’ll bring you up to speed.

Most of the athletes I’ve spoken with love two things about these goggles. They’re happy to finally have a goggle that fits their face and they really like the way the goggles reduce the sun’s glare. Zoggs actually use polarised filters, so they’re really effective when you’re swimming and the sun is reflecting off of the water.

So we set out to show off these features during the Zoggs photo shoot. We really wanted to get some up close and personal images of the sun reflecting off of the goggles while our athletes (Mitch Robbins and Craig Withers) are in the middle of an intense swim. It actually wasn’t that difficult because, much like any polarised pair of sunglasses, Zoggs are quite…

Canon Releases EOS 7D (Everything Else)

We’ve pretty much covered every feature of the new Canon 7D that’s worth at least one heartfelt “wow,” so let’s move to the less wow-worthy–but still pretty impressive–features of this new product.

And speaking of kicking guts, Canon surely knows to hit it right where it hurts most. The Nikon 300s’ main selling point is its ability to take videos—something that a lot of people were looking for. But with the Canon 7D’s release, Nikon 300s is losing a big part of its appeal.

The 7D’s video-taking capabilities can be considered the best in the market today. It has the ability to shoot 1080p video at 30, 24, or 25 frames per second (FPS). And, if you decrease that to 720p, you can take photos at a whopping 60FPS.

This camera also has a dedicated switch that allows the photographer to flip from video to stills in a heartbeat. The button encircles a stop/record button for the video, too.

Here are some sample videos taken with the Gizmodo):

Official video samples can be viewed at Canon Japan’s web site.

Canon Releases EOS 7D (Part 1)

It hasn’t been all that long since Nikon has released the D300s—which, until now, has been unchallenged as the only DSLR that can take videos as well as still shots—and already Canon has released a new model that, based from its specs (as well as some user reviews), can definitely give the D300s a good kick in the gut: the Canon EOS 7D.

Canon Releases Quarterly Earnings Report; Industry Still Looks Bleak

Canon has released its earning report for the second quarter today, and the results proved that the photography industry is also taking huge hits from the current economic crisis.

Compared to the same period of last year, sales were down to 28.2 percent all across the company—causing the company’s profits to nosedive to a whopping 72 percent. Camera sales are 20.7 percent less: Canon’s point-and-shoot products, the PowerShot line in particular, hasn’t been selling well.

There is a bright spot in this otherwise dark news, though: DSLR sale trends are actually up. According to Canon, the EOS 5D Mark OO and the EOS Digital Rebel T1i units have been selling well. A small portion of the company, but good news for investors all the same.

The company predicts that their earning performance will improve by the end of this year, but a full recovery isn’t expected until 2010.

Canon Launches Hybrid IS (Image Stabilizer)

Canon, one of the leading camera manufacturers today, has announced that they’ve been developing a new optical image stabilizer which will compensate for two kinds of camera shake—the first in the world.

Considering how bulky most professional cameras are today, it’s nearly impossible to hold a camera perfectly still while shooting, especially when the subject is moving (like in sports photography). Other IS features compensates for one kind camera shake only. The Canon Hybrid IS (Image Stabilizer) counteracts the errors caused by the two types of camera movement: angle camera shake, and shift camera shake. Angle camera shake can cause drastic changes when shooting in standard, while shift camera shake is more visible in macro photography and other close-range shooting. Camera shakes occur when the camera moves while its shutter is open, and its image sensor is exposed to light. The result is often blurred or unfocused subjects.

Canon has been studying methods to correct camera shake errors since…

Alex Dejong: Beyond the Blindness

Wanna know what true passion is? It’s when you lose something vital to something you love, and instead of giving up, you find ways to keep doing it.

Many people will probably say that a photographer is nobody without his eyesight. But if they do, then they probably haven’t met Alex Dejong.

Alex lost his eyesight because of a brain tumor three years ago. But thanks to technology, Alex’s blindness doesn’t get in the way of doing what he loves best: taking photos. Alex created a visual image from sounds using assistive software (a voice app that his smartphone, Nokia N82, supports), then takes the shot with his Leica or Canon.

Because of his handicap, Alex can’t edit his own photos so he hired an assistant to edit his photos for him. But VoiceOver, which reads the icons the user’s finger touches. Because…

Canon 1D Mark IV – more rumours… or is it?

I got a tip from a supposed tester of the Canon 1D Mark IV who had a lot of good things to say about the new camera.  Along with the tip that the camera is out in the wild comes some news of specs.  No word on how reliable this info is, but here’s the specs:

  • 1.3 crop

So yes, I’ve been caught. Looking at the new Canon 5D MarkII. I was walking around the city with a old friend of mine on Monday at lunchtime who runs a magazine here in Australia called Bluff magazine. He was wanting some advise on some new camera gear and I was more than happy to assist, given that I now had an opportunity to look through some of the larger retailers in the CBD. These certainly can’t compare to anything in the US or Asia. And they certainly aren’t a B&H!

So anyway, we walked around the major stores and we ended up looking more closely to the Canon range of Digital SLRs – not much bias from me … (cough cough). This is what I feel more comfortable in chatting about. And I do know whats on offer more so than any other range.

Let me fast forward a little to me. I was showing my friend…

Photography and video convergence, just ask Esquire.com

If you ever thought that its time for photography and video convergence, will its here and its coming thick and fast. You would all know that the Canon and Nikon ranges have added to their lines of cameras the ability to shoot HD video. Some might say its not that great, but other have really taken to it.

However, Esquire magazine just released its June edition, and it will feature the very sexy Megan Fox on its cover. Guess what? It was captured with a video camera. Holy crap. What could get better than seeing her in motion. hmmmm!

It’s not an everyday camera, but the RED One. The guys that produce RED have a huge arsenal of gear that is driving this convergence to the next level. They focus on building very high resolution tools for the digital cinema market.

What kind of tools? How about a handheld camera that gets 5k resolution, all while taking digital stills…
