Dan has taken an interesting approach to building his career as a professional photographer. Dan is a man who has used his knowledge, skills and talents and applied them to his photography career.  His path is interesting. He graduated from college with a degree in computer science.  He worked in the computer field for about five years and then he started his own small sales-funded computer software company.  Dan gained valuable knowledge and experience in a highly competitive business industry.  He later sold his company to become a “lifestyle-friendly” photographer.  Now here is the good part; all those years in the computer tech world paid off for him when he changed careers.  How?  He adapted those successful business models to his photography business.  He used his computer experience to develop a profitable online photography business.  Dan claims,

In two years, my business grew to a point that isn’t seen by most pro photographers for ten to fifteen years.

Dan further says that his initial investment were the expenses of a good camera, gear and travel.  I am sure he had to spend a few dollars taking several classes on technique and equipment.

Not everyone has the same background like Dan.  But the point here is that Dan already had some essential skills that he knew he could use to grow his photography business.  He did not reinvent the wheel; he did not spend a lot of time researching business methods; he did not have to spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to best market his photos on the internet.  That is why Dan’s photography business is successful and profitable.

Here are a few suggestions:  First take some time to think about your own background.  Make a list of your skills, knowledge, abilities and talents.  Think about how you can apply any of these to your photography business. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Dan has written a number of good books that are very affordable.  The book titled “Model Releases” is an interesting book on how to market your photos to a wide audience.  Here is a link to Dan’s page to order the books.  http://www.danheller.com/cgi/orderform.pl?action=allbooks
