I stumbled across Dan’s article and it could not have been more timely with Getty’s new web and mobile image products. In 2007, Dan wrote an interesting article about the future of photo sharing sites and agencies. I am going to touch on some key points from his article.
Dan states there are more hobby photographers than professional ones. Once digital cameras were out the market there has been an explosion of hobby photographers. They can earn some decent money by submitting their photos to internet sites such as shutterstock and flickr. Somebody out there will purchase a copy of their photo. Internet business is huge.

Imagine you are in Britain taking photos of people at some public event and a police officer suddenly confiscates your camera. You think what on earth is going on! Imagine someday you may be prevented from working in the “field” of the public realm. Why? Because you are taking pictures in public places which has become illegal to do so. Or you don’t have the permission slip to shoot in a particular public area. You say to yourself- how did this all come about. Well you have just been informed about what’s happening to the rights of freelance photographers in Britan, and soon other countries may follow. Photographers are being restricted from taking photos in public places. Continue reading »

Sometimes all it takes is being in the right place at the right time. That’s pretty much what happened to Andrew Rowe MacPherson. Angus went from being a hobby photographer to glamorous career in advertising and design. His interest in photography began at an early age. While other 11 year old kids were building model airplanes, he was building his own darkroom. Despite the practical degree he had got from college his true desire was to be a photographer.
He started off in London looking for work as an assistant but soon found it difficult to break into the business. So he headed for Japan where he began photographing rock bands for magazines. He spent two years in Japan building his portfolio. Now that was pretty clever. He found his own niche and used that niche to build his portfolio.

Renowned, award-winning action photographer Chase Jarvis is also well-known for his iPhone photography project. “The best camera is the one that’s with you,” he says, and for Chase, that camera is his iPhone.
Chase takes photos, edits them using applications in his iPhone, and shares them on his Twitter and his iPhone photography site. He takes between one up to a thousand photos in this, and shares the ones he thinks are his best to the world. And if you’ve seen his iPhone photos, there will be no question in your mind that indeed, taking remarkable photos has little to do with the camera you use. Like Chase, all you really need is an eye for photography and a handy dandy camera like the iPhone.

Andrew Zuckerman’s images, whether they be animals or portraits of distinguished personalities, are not only striking and detailed, but inspiring. They show an encapsulated part of his subjects. The grace of a giraffe. The majesty of a bird. The silence in the wake of communication’s absence. The years that earned a person’s intelligence.
All these he compiled in his books—fruits of several year’s worth of hard work and an endless supply of passion and enthusiasm—which are, quite understandably, gaining recognition from individuals and award-giving bodies alike.

Exotic creatures, a man’s wisdom, the importance of communication. These are subjects that are often unappreciated, mostly for the lack of easily understandable and intimate knowledge about them. These are areas that are, save for some basic tidbits, almost untouched; and the few things we know about them are not enough to truly see their beauty and essence.
Andrew Zuckerman’s work changes all that. His books Continue reading »

We’ve pretty much covered every feature of the new Canon 7D that’s worth at least one heartfelt “wow,” so let’s move to the less wow-worthy–but still pretty impressive–features of this new product.

And speaking of kicking guts, Canon surely knows to hit it right where it hurts most. The Nikon 300s’ main selling point is its ability to take videos—something that a lot of people were looking for. But with the Canon 7D’s release, Nikon 300s is losing a big part of its appeal.
The 7D’s video-taking capabilities can be considered the best in the market today. It has the ability to shoot 1080p video at 30, 24, or 25 frames per second (FPS). And, if you decrease that to 720p, you can take photos at a whopping 60FPS.
This camera also has a dedicated switch that allows the photographer to flip from video to stills in a heartbeat. The button encircles a stop/record button for the video, too.
Here are some sample videos taken with the Canon 7D (videos by Gizmodo):
Official video samples can be viewed at Canon Japan’s web site.

I have been checking out Jerry’s website “Catching the Light” and I think it is one of the best presented websites. His sports page is filled with 25 years of wonderful black and white and color pictures with good captions for you to study. You can learn a lot just by studying the photos-the vision, position, expression, angles, and lighting.
You will also enjoy reading through each topic on Jerry’s tips and techniques web page. Each topic is filled with brief, well written, straight to the point, not too wordy prose. Have you checked out other websites- they overwhelm you with so much information that you are exhausted or overwhelmed. Not Jerry’s, so take some time to go through his “Tips and Techniques” page.
