For the Love of Flying: Lani Savage’s Aerial Photos

In the photography industry, to have a successful business, it’s necessary to be passionate about two things: photography itself, and the subject you want to take photos of. In some cases it’s children, in some, it’s sports. But there’s another kind of photography that rarely ever get recognition—aerial photography.

Lani Savage is an aerial photographer. She has loved flying ever since she was a little girl, and quite understandably, because she came from a brood of pilots—her father and her brothers are all one. Determined to pursue what she wants, Lani registered for flying lessons at an open house in Redlands Municipal Airport in May 2008.

She then took flying lessons at M.Y. Air Flight School at the Redlands airport, and pilot ground school courses in San Bernardino Valley College. She was taught by Richard Thompson, a veteran aviation teacher. Continue reading »

What is your product?  Your photos.  Trying to put a price on your photography can be difficult.  And it can vary with the type of photography you do. Make a list of what other similar photographers in your region are charging.  So now what are you going to do with all of this information.

Well I am going to send you to NPPA Pricing Photography  which has pricing tools, price lists, digital pricing guidelines and a business calculator.  You will need to dedicate a few hours to doing this.  But it will really help you to establish fair prices for your work and product.

Stock Photography

The National Press Photographers Association NPPA is a worthy investment.  Or you can tag this website on your “favorites” and still get some very good information like I did.  Stock photography is the new method for photographers to bank, market and advertise photos.  There is a plethora of Stock photography websites. So which one do you choose?  As I read through sports photography articles written by the “experts” I check out the resources that are mentioned in their articles.  Often these resources are overlooked because they are typically at the end of an article.  But I am always on the lookout for these references and resources because I know, they know, where to go to get the best information and tools necessary to have a successful photography business.

That is how I discovered the NPAA website.  This association has been around since 1946 and they are known worldwide.  Although they cater to photojournalists, any photographer will benefit from the information and tools they provide.  One valuable resource I found on their website is PhotoShelter.  This is the first place to begin learning about the stock photography business. Stock photography is a huge money making business. Why?  It is the best way to promote your photos to industry, non-profits, graphic artists, governmental agencies, and other buyers worldwide.  Just think about it- before the internet how would someone have been able to get access to so many different groups to market their photos.  It just would not have happened.  However, this means it is highly competitive, so you have to carefully choose the best way to start your stock photography business. And find your own niche as an individual photographer or as a group of photographers. What is nice about being part of a group, you can cover more of your niche,  and exchange ideas and knowledge which ultimately leads to a more successful stock business.

So take some time to carefully read through the School of Stock to learn everything you need to know for starting stock photography.
