Design of Objects – be Objectified

Today I was searching for something. Actually I was looking for something on Johathan Ive, the master designer at Apple. He has created so many fantastic products, but the most impressive design for me is the new Macbook Pro body.

I can hear you saying now, all the moaning and groaning, what the hell am I talking about design and Macbooks? Well, I feel that design is so important in photography.  They are the creators of those fantastic simple lines. The ones that we all like to shoot. And of course, in Jonathan’s case, the very elegant Macbook. Who can fault the great looking design work of the Macbook unibody?

I personally draw inspiration from some of these people. It allows me to see a different perspective of the elements they work with and the materials they use. Also, it can show me what they were seeing when it all began.

Anyway, I stumbled over this fantastic looking independant movie that has so many great industrial designers in it. The movie is call Objectified. Here is a snippet from the website.

Objectified is a documentary about industrial design; it’s about the manufactured objects we surround ourselves with, and the people who make them. On an average day, each of us uses hundreds of objects. (Don’t believe it? Start counting: alarm clock, light switch, faucet, shampoo bottle, toothbrush, razor…) Who makes all these things, and why do they look and feel the way they do? All of these objects are “designed,” but how can good design make them, and our lives, better?

Here is a small taste of Objectified…

Our first blog entry – finally!

Yes, I am keeping to my own self imposed deadline to have our very first blog entry done before things get hectic, well actually they already are. My deadline is to have this before the end of the first week, correction, by the end of the month.  And by the looks of things we have done it.

To those who don’t know me my name is Shawn Smith and I’m one of the co-founders of Blinq Photography. Our business is very simple – capture the very best imagery of athletes. This will include them in their respective event as well as working with them and their sponsors advertising agency. Usually the later for anything commercial.

The time came for me to start pushing out something that resembled information for the masses. I’m always getting asked “How did I start?”, “What camera do you use?” and of course “How did you take that shot?”. Throughout this blog I will provide some details on how I did things. I’m sure Rob and I will chat about applications. Also, as the business grows we’ll talk about the challenges and pitfalls we have come into. What to avoid and what things we have been successful in. This will be great for anyone thinking of getting themselves into photography as a business.

This will wrap it up for me for my first blog post and the first for Blinq photography.

Thanks for stopping by and I look forward to many comments, questions and anything else in between.
